The Bangladesh Premier League has long been held to be one of the world’s finest franchise tournaments and has gained many accolades. Many cricket fans consider it the best franchise league in Asia outside of India, with it also being the designated number one tournament that the country of Bangladesh holds.
The current season of the BPL will witness a lot of top-quality players in action, along with the presence of top coaches who will be keen on leaving an imprint on their thought processes. Many of these players will arrive in Bangladesh from overseas destinations and aim to take the country by storm with their antics. They are known to be exquisite performers with both bat and ball in hand.
Although the presence of international players will be significant at this season of the BPL, it is a tournament primarily designed for the growth and development of local Bangladeshi cricketers. The latter uphold this tournament in high regard and consider it one of the stepping stones for their selection into the national team. It has been well documented that players who have performed well in the BPL have gone on to represent their country, Bangladesh, at least in white-ball cricket.
The significance of the BPL cannot be spoken of lightly either. The proliferation of this tournament has increased the standard of Bangladeshi cricket and benefitted a whole generation of players, including current skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto. The southpaw, among the finest batters the country has produced, is a brilliant player of spin and likes to use his feet against slow bowlers. His sweep is also a shot that often gets spoken about at great length.
It is not just Shanto; several other Bangladeshi cricketers have benefitted from participating in the BPL, allowing them to test their wares against the best players in the world. The likes of Melody Hasan Miraz and Towhead Hridoy, who are considered the backbone of the Bangladeshi white-ball teams, have also benefited from playing against top players from across the world in the BPL.
The rise of Bangladeshi cricket in recent years has been well documented in the media, and perhaps no result was as significant for them as the 2-0 whitewash they effected over their bitter rivals Pakistan in August last year. That this happened on Pakistan’s soil gave the Bangladeshi cricket supporters even more cheer. Although that was in Test cricket, Bangladesh has significantly improved itself in white-ball cricket, too, and the latter has to be attributed most single-handedly to the rise and significance of the BPL.
This season of the BPL will feature many high-octane matches between franchises who will want nothing better than to see the back of the other, and we cannot wait to bring live updates, news, and analysis from the live action! Below are the squads of the respective franchises participating in the BPL this season, followed by the fixtures list.
The tournament began on the last but one day of the year – December 30 – and will continue till February. The final match will be played on February 7, 2025. There will be 42 matches in the tournament, including the playoff stage. The top four teams, as usual, will play in the playoffs, with the first-ranked side taking on the second-ranked in Qualifier 1. The winner of this match will go directly to the final. The third and fourth-ranked sides will play in the Eliminator. The winner of the Eliminator will then go on to play the loser of Qualifier 1 in Qualifier 2 for a spot in the final.
