Bangladesh beat Pakistan by six wickets on Tuesday, September 3, in the second Test at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. They wrapped up a historic 2-0 series win over their opponents on their home soil.
Bangladesh had never won a Test against Pakistan before this series, but by the time it ended, they had won two and picked up a series win to boot.
This series of defeats will sting Pakistan, especially their skipper Shan Masood, who has led his team to two consecutive whitewashes.
The Shaheens were beaten 0-3 by Australia last winter. Now, they lost 0-2 to lowly-ranked Bangladesh at home. The selectors will be itching to make widespread changes in the side. The head coach Gary Kirsten will also try to ensure that a few heads roll.
Batting first, Pakistan were bowled out for 274, with only Saim Ayub (54) and Masood (58) lending some respectability to their total.
Agha Salman was under fire from all sections of the media for his poor performances across the series. Now, he added a valuable 54 runs to the total coming lower down the order, but very few Pakistani batters could handle Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The off-spinner returned with 5-61.
Bangladesh did not fare much better and were bowled out for 262, conceding a twelve-run lead to the hosts, who would have thought it enough to push for a big series win.
Bangladeshi seamers Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana picked up five and four wickets to dismantle the Pakistani batting unit for a mere 172 runs on the board. Mohammad Rizwan, with 43, and Agha Salman, with an unbeaten 47, were the only ones who stood up for the Shaheens.
Bangladesh needed 184 runs to win the game and the series. They did so without even batting an eyelid. All their batters contributed to the cause, with Zakir Hasan top-scoring with a well-crafted 40 right at the top of the order.
Veterans Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan, who spent most of their lives without winning a Test against Pakistan, were at the crease when the latter hit the winning runs.
This series win will be historic and momentous for Bangladesh cricket. It is extremely important for the nation, given the turmoil it is currently experiencing.
