Batting first, Sri Lanka ran up a mammoth total of 531 runs on the board thanks to Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis’ timely knocks. Although none of their batters scored centuries, they got close enough and helped their team prop themselves up to such a gigantic score.
Despite their best efforts, Bangladesh fell short in their first innings, being bowled out for a mere 178. Sri Lankan bowler Asitha Fernando was the wrecker-in-chief, picking up four wickets and causing a major setback for the home team.
With a mammoth total to chase down in the fourth innings, Bangladesh fought hard. However, their efforts were in vain as they were bowled out for 318 early on in the fifth day. Mominul Haque and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored half-centuries, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for the home team.
Lahiru Kumara took four wickets for Sri Lanka in the second innings. Although Bangladesh appeared to be trying to chase the runs down at one stage, they were cut short due to the impressive bowling performance of the Lankans.
